Bond organized voter registration drives across the segregated South with “SNCC,” the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, an organization he helped found at age twenty while an undergraduate at Morehouse College in Atlanta. Bond was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives after the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965, and served as chairman of the NAACP from 1998 to 2009.
