CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY

APRIL 30, 2015 is celebrated as INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY at various locations throughout the world to highlight jazz and it's diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe.

It brings together communities, schools, artists, historians, academics, and enthusiasts, all over the world to celebrate and learn about jazz, it's roots, it's future, and it's impact on society.

HERE ARE A FEW WAYS TO CELEBRATE:

***   Play jazz recordings

***   Play video clips of jazz performances

***   Decorate with jazz pics or posters

***   Research jazz roots in your local area

BUT DON'T JUST DO IT FOR A DAY, DO IT EVERYDAY!

In 2014, AAPF launched a town hall series on women and girls of color in cities throughout the country. Thus far, hearings have been held in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City, with each convening gathering between 50 and 350 participants. To see a preview of the series, please click here

Our commitment in hosting these hearings is to bring the circumstances facing girls and women of color out of the shadows and squarely into public policy debates. Women and girls of color will provide testimony across a range of issue areas, including school push-out, incarceration, public and private violence, trafficking, foster care, economic wellbeing and homelessness. Key decision makers will participate in the hearings as commissioners to suggest and advance tangible interventions.

Historically, government hearings have been held on men and boys of color, generating a deeper understanding among stakeholders of their specific needs. These hearings have led to increased public will and ultimately, the development of the black male achievement landscape we see today. Through hosting similar hearings on women and girls of color, we hope to increase our nation’s collective understanding of the disparities they experience, both those that are common to and different from their male counterparts.

Please join us in calling for a comprehensive and gender inclusive racial justice agenda!

HIS - STORY PART I

OLAUDAH EQUIANO was born in Nigeria around 1745. He was captured in West Africa when he was around 11 years old. In his own words, Olaudah Equiano tells what it was like :

"WE ARRIVED AT THE COAST. THE FIRST THING I SAW WAS A SLAVE SHIP. I WAS CARRIED ON BOARD. I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO BE KILLED. I SAW MANY BLACK PEOPLE. THEY WERE CHAINED TOGETHER. I WAS PUT UNDER THE DECKS. A TERRIBLE SMELL GREETED MY NOSE. I BECAME SICK AND WAS NOT ABLE TO EAT...

To read the complete narrative of OLAUDAH EQUIANO Google his name and get a copy of his book. After you are familiar with his account, consider the following questions:

1 - Why was it dangerous to be on the slave ship?
2 - Why, do you think, did the slave traders beat Equiano when he would not eat?
3 - What did Equiano think of his captors?

FORUM ON BLACK HISTORY

2 - WHY DO YOU THINK IT WAS EASIER TO ENSLAVE BLACKS THAN WHITES OR INDIANS?

3 - WHY DO YOU THINK WHITE COLONISTS WANTED TO LIMIT THE RIGHTS OF FREE BLACKS?

The public youth music education program known as El Sistema has reached hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans, largely through participation in classical music ensembles. In 2007, drummer Andrés Briceño and head of the Simón Bolívar Conservatory of Music Valdemar Rodríguez introduced a jazz program to El Sistema, with the goal of promoting the music throughout Venezuela. The flagship ensemble, Simón Bolívar Big Band Jazz, presents the work of both American jazz masters and Venezuelan composers, and like its orchestral counterparts, has now toured the U.S. Jazz Night In America presents Simón Bolívar Big Band Jazz during a recent stateside sojourn, from Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola within New York's Jazz at Lincoln Center.
Simón BolívarBig Band | April 26 & 29 Jazz Night In America presents The Simon Bolivar Big Band. For the past 40 years, El Sistema has brought free classical music, instruments and lessons to a quarter million underprivileged kids in Venezuela. The cream of the crop perform for sellout crowds at some of the world’s most prestigious venues. Five years ago they started a new ensemble - The Simon Bolivar Big Band. We’ll hear them play Dizzy Club Coca Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center, and learn why jazz is a lot more than just music.
