The 2015 Newport Jazz Festival schedule is finally online
! There's a lot to be excited about. The triumphant return of Dr. John, the otherworldly enchantments of Cassandra Wilson performing her Billie Holiday tribute, a set from Jon Batiste on the heels of his announcement as band leader for Stephen Colbert's Late Show, British multi-talent Jamie Cullum, and sets from Arturo SandovalMaria Schneider, Kenny Garrett, and so many more.
Now it's time to take that excitement and make it a reality.
WBGO is offering the only festival trip that takes you straight to the music. With our bus trips, we'll take you from Brooklyn, Manhattan, Newark, Boston, or Old Lyme, Connecticut, and bring you right to where the best of the fest is happening -- no hassle over parking, no stressful commute. Just sit back with other excited fans and enjoy an air-conditioned bus ride to the sparkling waters of Narragansett Bay and the historic Fort Adams State Park where the festival grounds are! Pianist Eric Reed celebrates the 110th anniversary of tenor saxophone master Coleman Hawkins' birth. Reed brings Tivon Pennicott, tenor saxophone; Warren Vache, cornet; Dezron Douglas, bass; and drummer Willie Jones III to honor his legacy. Interviews from the band come from leader Eric Reed and Tivon Pennicott. We also speak with jazz historical and tenor saxophonist Loren Schoenberg to learn more about the life and music of Coleman Hawkins.

Sam Schwartz is known worldwide as Gridlock Sam, a nickname the media gave him for his role in coining the term, Gridlock. As New York City's traffic commissioner in the 1980's, he designed routes for numerous crowded corners. Schwartz says New York would rather hand out parking tickets then crack down on illegal drivers because it brings in more money. He is also a columnist for The Daily News.

WBGO Members get great seats for this event and are treated to a meet and greet reception with light refreshments afterwards. “It Don’t Mean a Thing,” “Prelude to a Kiss,” “Sophisticated Lady” — Edward Kennedy Ellington was American music royalty. Now, another member of the jazz aristocracy, legendary vocalist Ernie Andrews, makes a rare appearance to put his stamp on these timeless tunes. Add the soulful sounds of Houston Person's tenor sax, plus vibes virtuoso Steve Nelson, and you’ve got pure jazz heaven.
