Main Stage Headliners

Jazz

Conrad Herwig

New York-based jazz trombonist Conrad Herwig is considered one of the world’s complete jazz musicians, atop both the performing and jazz educational fields with an abundance of composer and arranger credits, as well. He has performed and recorded with Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, Frank Sinatra, Joe Lovano and Tom Harrell, among many others.

Blues

Popa Chubby

Born Ted Horowitz in the Bronx, New York, Popa Chubby, Chubby took his cue from artists of the ’60s, including Sly & the Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix, and Eric Clapton, among others. By the time he was in his early twenties, he enjoyed and played blues music. His Sony/Okeh debut, Booty and the Beast, was produced by longtime Atlantic Records engineer/producer Tom Dowd.

Neo-Soul/R&B

Dwele

Dwele grew up on Detroit’s west side, listening to soul music from Motown visionaries as well as jazz on the radio. A couple years after releasing his first two albums, he provided the hook on Kanye West’s hit single “Flashing Lights” and signed to Koch/eOne to release Sketches of a Man (2008) and W.ants W.orld W.omen (2010). Both albums maintained the singer’s streak of Top Ten R&B albums. Greater Than One (2012), also released on eOne, featured some of his breeziest, most pleasing grooves. ~ John Bush, Rovi

Party Band

The Family Stone

Sly & The Family Stone harnessed all of the disparate musical and social trends of the late ’60s, creating a wild, brilliant fusion of soul, rock, R&B, psychedelia, and funk that broke boundaries down without a second thought. Their music was joyous, but as the ’60s ended, so did the good times. Stone became disillusioned with the ideals he had been preaching in his music. Stone turned out one more modern funk classic, 1973’s Fresh. His music continued to provide the basic template for urban soul, funk, and even hip-hop well into the ’90s.
