RICHARD WRIGHT, novelist, essayist, poet, and short story writer, was born on a cotton plantation September 4, 1908. Wright"s first major success came in 1940. when his novel Native Son was published.
It became the first book written by a Black writer to be chosen for the Book-of-the-Month club.
