Booker T. Washington-COMMUNITY CREATOR

Booker T. Washington was born a slave in Virginia in 1856. After emancipation he moved to West Virginia, but was educated at Hampton Institute in Virginia.

In 1881 he founded the now-legendary Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. He believed that Black people should be trained in practical skills and should improve themselves through vocational education.

In the 1890's he became the spokesperson for Black people, an until his death in 1915 was thought of as the leader of Black Americans.
