WBGO Says Farewell to Julian Bond
WBGO says farewell to civil rights leader Julian Bond. Bond organized voter registration drives across the segregated South with “SNCC,” the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, an organization he helped found at age twenty while an undergraduate at Morehouse College in Atlanta.
Bond was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives after the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965, and served as chairman of the NAACP from 1998 to 2009.
Bond was also a music lover, and sat down with WBGO’s Felix Hernandez in 2010 to talk about his love for music, and how it helped awaken young people's desire for social change in the 1950s and 60s. LISTEN NOW
