AS A MATTER OF FACT:

ON JULY 28, 1917, A SILENT PARADE PROTEST TOOK PLACE IN NEW YORK CITY. MORE THAN 10,000 BLACK PEOPLE MARCHED DOWN FIFTH AVENUE TO PROTEST LYNCHING AND ANTI-BLACK VIOLENCE IN THE U.S.

ORGANIZED BY W.E.B. DU BOIS, AND THE NAACP, THE PARADE CAME ABOUT AS A RESULT OF THE EAST SAINT LOUIS RIOTS IN MAY AND JULY OF THAT YEAR. MORE THAN 250 BLACKS WERE KILLED BY WHITE MOBS.

IT WAS THE FIRST SUCH PARADE IN NEW YORK, AND THE SECOND INSTANCE OF BLACKS PUBLICLY DEMONSTRATING FOR CIVIL RIGHTS.
