Rosa Parks was born in 1913.
On 12/1/1955 she refused to give up her seat on a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama, in the "colored section," to a white passenger.
Although she was not the first Black person to resist bus segregation, organizers for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People believed she was the best candidate for seeing this action through court proceedings.
Her act of defiance became the symbol for the modern Civil Rights Movement.

Frederick Douglass was born a slave in Maryland in 1817. As a boy he taught himself to read and write.
In addition to working as both a house servant and a field hand, he also, later in his life, worked in a shipyard where he wrote fake passes to help slaves escape to freedom.
When he was 21 years of age, Douglass himself escaped from slavery, and consequently spent the rest of his life working to free Blacks from slavery and segregation.
